28 Weeks Later (2007)
Sequel to '28 Days Later' manages to remain as tense as the original, and on a bigger scale. Excellent. ***1/2
The Ant Bully (2006)
Respectable animated fare for kids, with some good animation and action. As far as comedy for adults, it's not Pixar quality ***
Baby : Secret of the Lost Legend (1985)
A sadly dated fantasy with below average fx. Dinosaur movie fans may find entertainment value, but kids of today will find it laughable after the likes of 'Jurassic Park' **
Cloverfield (2007)
Loved it when I saw it at the movies - found it original and exciting. It may lose some of it's impact on the small screen, and some of the camerwork, while clever, won't agree with some people. Still, a dark and effective twist on the giant monster genre. ***1/2
Confetti (2005)
This mockumentary with weddings is disappointingly light, but entertainingly so. Some darker humour and more unstable characters (though there is a bit of that) would have made it classic. ***
Flushed Away (2006)
Some hilarious moments make this one a winner! Watch out for the side-splitting squealing slugs! ***1/2
Ghost Rider (2005)
Overly confusing action flick with some convincing special fx. Fans of the comic book character and action fans may find some charm and excitement, others may want to avoid. **1/2
Happily N'Ever After (2006)
An entertaining if childish animated fantasy with good voice work from Sigourney Weaver. **1/2
Mr Magorium's Wonder Emporium (2007)
Colorful fantasy reminiscent of Willy Wonka but with toys instead of candy - and Mr Magorium isn't scary. A good score, some good CGI and a few laughs - what more could you ask for a rainy weekend with the tweens? And Dustin Hoffman adds some energy to the character ***
The Nanny Diaries (2006)
Enertaining chick-flick, with solid performances from Scarlet Johanssen and Laura Linney. Male audiences may want to avoid it though, as the laugh factor is outshone by sentiment. ***
Pan's Labyrinth (2006)
Until I saw 'Pan's Labyrinth', I thought most movies these days had lost their magic. But this has restored my faith, and the movie is a total marvel. Believe the hype. But be warned parents : this is no kid's movie! *****
The Pursuit of Happyness (2006)
Will Smith and his actual son are absolutely terrific in this heart-tugging tale of father and son - have the tissues handy! ****
She's the Man (2005)
A good performance from Amanda Bynes makes this teen comedy quite watchable, as she undergoes a gender reversal to complete in a soccer match. But things get way confusing, as love and affection get in the way! ***
Surf's Up (2006)
Some terrific surfing animation and solid laughs bring 'Surf's Up' slightly above the average animated fare. Nicely done. ***1/2
Talladega Nights (2005)
Some hilarious moments make this comedy above average, with outstanding comic performances from Will Ferrell and Sacha Baron Cohen. ***1/2
The Water Horse (2007)
Terrific family fantasy, with some wonderful special effects and a big heart. A young boy finds a large egg on the beach and watches it hatch into a large dinosaur-looking creature whom he names Crusoe. ***1/2
Wild Hogs (2006)
A great cast and some hilarious moments will entertain the masses in this appealing road movie/comedy/coming-of-late age flick. ***
Zoom (2006)
I wasn't expecting much from this superhero comedy, however some fun moments make it watchable. Not exceptional, by any means, but watchable. ***
